I think you made an amazing decision by keeping the baby to term. Not many 16 year old girls have the courage and maturity to make that difficult decision, and would give into pressure from their parents and peers. You grew so much over the course of nine months, and changed a woman’s life. Giving up a child is such a hard thing to do, and I bet it feels like you went through all the pain and suffering for no reward. But the reward is that you gave a woman the joy and happiness she needed in her life, and you made her dream of becoming a mother a reality. I have so much respect for you based on your maturity and your decisions, and I can only imagine the pain you have been through.
I believe every woman should have her right to privacy and choice. You did the right thing by keeping your baby, but you also would have been doing the right thing by aborting your baby. Due to your situation, aborting the baby was a viable option, and multiple people suggested it. Any choice a woman makes about her own reproductive health is a choice that should be taken seriously and respected. No other person should have a say, except for the father of the child. Even then there are restrictions, and the woman should always have the final say. It is her body, and they are her choices. I respect women who have the courage to carry their babies to term, yet I will also respect women who chose to abort their children. It is truly horrible to have to abort your own child, but if the child will grow up unwanted, unsupported, or under harsh circumstances, it is in the child’s best interest. If the child has a severe deformity, and his or her quality of living is impaired, it is in the child’s best interest. If the mother must abort her child to save her own life, so be it. There are so many reasons why a woman might end her pregnancy, and so many controversial issues surrounding the morality of abortion, and that is why a woman should have her right to privacy.
Roe V. Wade should stay in effect, because the option needs to be out there for woman in need. If someone is not comfortable with the morality of abortion, then they do not have to take advantage of their right to choice and privacy. Like it or not, everybody has their own opinions and woman will find their ways to get abortions. Supreme Court Justices and bystanders should not be the ones choosing what is wrong and what is right for woman. Woman should be choosing what is right for woman.
There are so many options other than abortion. There is adoption, which could help a woman in need who can not conceive a child. There is contraception, which will prevent a pregnancy from happening in the first place. My mom is the most influential and inspirational woman I know, and she deals with woman in difficult situations like these every day. She is a certified nurse midwife, which is exactly what I want to be when I am finished with my education. She prescribes birth control to women, to prevent pregnancy, but also to prevent a lot of other issues as well. In my honest opinion, the birth control pill should be named something more like the ‘hormone regulation pill,’ because it does so much more than it is sought out to be. The pill can help regulate a woman’s cycle, clear acne, and decrease painful menstrual cramps. In many ways, birth control can improve a woman’s quality of life. In my mom’s case, she had endometriosis, which is where tissue lining the inside of the uterus grows on the outside of the uterus. If she had been taking birth control since her first menstrual cycle, the issue could have been prevented or less severe. The pill would regulate or even stop the bleeding altogether, because of how much control it gives you over skipping periods. There are so many types of birth control, and there is bound to be a type out there for you in the future.
Props to the women who carry their unwanted babies to full term, props to the women who go through pain and suffering, and give up a piece of them to make others happy. But also, props to the women who are smart enough to analyze their current situations. I pray that one day these women can be ready to have a baby, because childbirth is a beautiful and intimate experience that is unique to our gender. Props to you Juno, and taking advantage of your 14th amendment right to choice.
